All ages – all the BEST things to do.

Rug Braiding Demonstration at Museum of Art & Archaeology

Discover a traditional craft that has been passed down through generations at a free rug braiding demonstration on June 14 from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Museum of Art & Archaeology’s Research Room in Ellis Library.

Hosted by the Missouri Folk Arts Program, the event features Sharon Hutchinson and Ali Hutchinson, participants in the 2026 Traditional Arts Apprenticeship Program. Visitors can learn about the history of rug braiding, watch live demonstrations, and hear how this family tradition has been preserved and shared across generations.

The Research Room is located on the lower level of Ellis Library near the Visitor Services desk. Guests are welcome to drop in anytime during the two-hour event and can also explore the museum’s permanent collections and special exhibits while visiting.

Admission is free and open to the public. Parking is available on Hitt Street, at the Hitt Street Parking Structure, and in the visitor lot near the University Bookstore.

Whether you’re interested in folk art, textile traditions, family history, or simply learning a new craft, this hands-on demonstration offers a unique opportunity to connect with a piece of Missouri’s cultural heritage.
