Columbia residents have a new option for recycling glass. City of Columbia Utilities has partnered with Ripple Glass to offer free glass recycling at the Columbia landfill, helping keep recyclable glass out of the waste stream.
Residents can bring eligible glass food and beverage containers to Ripple Glass’s signature purple recycling bin at 5700 Peabody Road.
How the Free Glass Drop-Off Works
Residents should enter the landfill using the scalehouse ramp. Vehicles will be weighed when entering, but there is no charge for dropping off glass for recycling.
The purple recycling bin has a porthole-style opening, so bottles and jars need to be placed into the container one at a time. Items that are too large to fit through the opening are not accepted and should not be placed on top of or left beside the bin.
What Glass Can Be Recycled?
Glass food and beverage bottles and jars can be any color, but the glass must be transparent.
Residents should make sure bottles and jars are empty and free of food or liquid before dropping them off. Labels do not need to be removed, but lids and bottle caps should be discarded separately.
The glass-only bin does not accept:
- Opaque glass
- Porcelain
- Window glass
- Boxes
- Plastic bags
- Glass items too large to fit through the porthole
Keeping other materials out of the bin helps ensure the collected glass can be properly recycled.
Glass Is Not Accepted in Curbside Recycling
Residents should continue to keep glass out of Columbia’s curbside recycling collection. Glass should not be placed inside blue recycling bags and will not be accepted as part of curbside recycling.
Instead, residents who want to recycle eligible glass can take it directly to the new Ripple Glass bin at the landfill.
Glass Recycling Drop-Off Hours
The Columbia landfill accepts drop-off materials during the following hours:
- Monday-Friday: 7 a.m.-3 p.m.
- Saturday: 8 a.m.-1 p.m.
- Location: Columbia Landfill, 5700 Peabody Road, Columbia, MO
- Cost for glass recycling: Free
More Glass Recycling Locations Could Be Considered
For now, the landfill location is part of an effort to provide Columbia residents with another glass recycling option. The City says it continues to explore additional glass recycling opportunities, and other locations could potentially be considered depending on how well this trial works.
Residents can find additional information about the program through the City of Columbia’s glass recycling announcement.
