Want to try catfishing on the Missouri River but don’t have the equipment? Missouri River Relief is making it easier for Columbia-area families and outdoor enthusiasts to get started with its free Catfishing Gear Library.
The program allows participants to borrow fishing poles, bait and tackle at no cost. Whether you’re completely new to fishing or haven’t picked up a fishing pole in years, the gear library provides an affordable way to enjoy the Missouri River.
Missouri River Relief also offers guided catfishing lessons for anyone who wants a little help getting started.
How the Free Catfishing Gear Library Works
Borrowing fishing equipment is simple, and you don’t need to own any gear to participate.
To get started, fill out the Catfishing Gear Library Checkout Form. Requests should be submitted by the Monday before your desired weekend.
Once your request is confirmed, Missouri River Relief will provide your checkout dates and a personalized access code for the equipment shed.
Gear Pickup Location: Missouri River Relief, 916 N. College Ave., Suite 2, Columbia, MO 65201.
The equipment shed is located outside the office, making it easy to pick up your supplies.
Each tackle box also includes a map highlighting recommended fishing spots along the Missouri River.
Free Catfishing Lessons for Beginners
Not sure how to get started? Missouri River Relief also offers hands-on catfishing lessons with experienced instructors.
Lessons take place along the banks of the Missouri River at Cooper’s Landing Riverside Resort & Marina.
Participants learn the basics of river catfishing while getting a chance to practice with an instructor.
Here’s what to know about the lessons:
- Length: 1.5 hours
- Location: Cooper’s Landing Riverside Resort & Marina
- Available Times: Time slots between 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m., depending on the session
- Group Size: Families and groups of up to five people are welcome
- Equipment: All fishing gear is provided
- Fishing Permit: Not required during the lesson because participants are covered under Missouri River Relief’s educational fishing permit
These lessons are a great option for families, beginners and anyone interested in learning how to fish independently.

Where Can You Go Catfishing Near Columbia?
Once you’ve checked out your fishing equipment, you can head to the Missouri River and find a place to cast your line.
Missouri River Relief recommends several fishing locations near Columbia, including Cooper’s Landing Riverside Resort & Marina, Eagle Bluffs Conservation Area and Taylor’s Landing Access.
Before heading out, check the weather, river levels and fishing regulations. Sturdy shoes, drinking water, sunscreen and a life jacket are also recommended.
Do You Need a Missouri Fishing Permit?
Anyone ages 16–64 generally needs a valid Missouri fishing permit when borrowing equipment and fishing independently.
Permits can be purchased through the Missouri Department of Conservation.
Missouri River Relief can help participants with the permit process and may have financial assistance available for those who need it.
A fishing permit is not required for participants attending the guided lessons, as they are covered under the organization’s educational fishing permit.
