When Germany invaded Hungary near the end of World War II, most Hungarian Jews still believed they were safe from the genocide that was happening to Jews throughout Europe. This would not be the case, as Erika Schwartz’s harrowing tale shows us.
Erika is one of the youngest Holocaust survivors in the U.S., born in Hungary in April of 1944. She and her mother were able to stay safe in Budapest with false papers — they would come to find out at the end of the war that the rest of their family had been killed in the Holocaust.
