Have you ever wondered whether an old window should be repaired instead of replaced? A special two-day workshop in Columbia will give homeowners, preservation enthusiasts, contractors, and curious community members the opportunity to learn the skills needed to preserve one of the most overlooked features of historic buildings.
CoMo Preservation and True North Preservation are partnering to host a hands-on Historic Window Preservation Workshop on June 12-13. The event is designed for all skill levels and focuses on the history, repair, and restoration of historic windows.
Leading the workshop is Marie Taylor, owner of True North Preservation in Cape Girardeau. Taylor specializes in wood and metal window restoration and is passionate about helping property owners understand the value of preserving original windows whenever possible.
The event begins with a free public presentation at 6 p.m. on Friday, June 12, at First Christian Church. The presentation will explore the history of windows in America and discuss why historic windows are among the most endangered architectural features in older buildings.
Participants can then continue their learning experience on Saturday, June 13, with a hands-on workshop at Sawdust Studios from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The workshop costs $75 per person and includes practical instruction on assessing historic windows for preservation and restoration.
Attendees will gain experience with:
- Paint removal techniques
- Window glazing
- Glass cutting
- Finish preparation
- Window disassembly and restoration methods
Whether you’re restoring an older home, working in preservation, or simply interested in learning a valuable new skill, this workshop offers a rare opportunity to work directly with an experienced restoration professional.
Reservations are required. Participants may register for the free presentation only or choose the presentation and hands-on workshop package.
AIA continuing education credits are available for architects.
The event is supported by Sawdust Studios, Missouri Preservation, First Christian Church, True North Preservation, and the Veterans United Foundation.
