Popular music has always been a powerful tool in shaping public opinion and sharing the news of the day. It is built into the DNA of our democracy. Chris Vallillo's celebrates our country's 250th anniversary by exploring how music has been used as a political and social tool throughout the history of our nation.
Vallillo will perform a wide range of music from the Revolutionary War through the political songs of the 19th century and the dust bowl ballads of Woody Guthrie right on up to the protest songs of the '50s, '60s and today. Including well known pieces with obscure ones, Vallillo will share the music, history and the back stories of the music that shaped the course of our nation.
A singer-songwriter and instrumentalist with an affinity for American roots music, Vallillo is a skilled six-string and bottleneck slide guitarist who incorporates original and traditional material in his performances. Perhaps the archaeology degree Vallillo earned at Beloit College helped him see the important little details of life which imbue his songs with a sense of history. His music echoes the influences of Mississippi John Hurt, Norman Blake, Doc Watson and John Fahey.
Making his first area appearance in over 20 years, guitarist Pat Metheny brings his new project Side-Eye III+ to The Missouri Theatre Thursday, April 16.

Katie and the Honky Tonks 9pm Ty Toomsen and the Twang City Smokers 10pm
Katie Sires and her self-proclaimed band of “Honky Tonk Dorks” hail from Waterloo, Iowa. Known for Katie’s awe-inspiring vocal talent, storytelling, live performances, and dedication to the classic country sound. Katie and the Honky Tonks have hit the road with Emily Nenni, opened for Ian Munsick at Xtream Arena, and played numerous country music festivals around the midwest. They’ve also shared the stage with notable artists like Dale Watson, Josh Turner, and Jon Pardi.
Their debut album, Ain’t No Shame, OUT NOW builds on the success of their 2024 EP, Two-Steppin’ in the Shower, which solidified their place in the Midwest country music scene. The EP earned widespread recognition, with Iowa Public Radio saying, “The EP sounds more like Nashville 1964, not Nashville 2024.” Lonesome Highway, in a review of "Ain't No Shame' says, "Katie and the Honky Tonks join the ever-growing canon of women like Summer Dean, Emily Nenni, Sarah Gayle Meech and Kimmi Bitter, to name but a few, that are representing genuine honky tonk music."
KTHT's debut album 'Ain't No Shame' has grabbed the attention of the Recording Academy and has been selected for consideration for Best Traditional Country Album at the 2025 Grammys. Katie and the Honky Tonks have also won Country Artist of the Year at the 2025 Iowa Music Awards.

Join us for a free noon concert by the Ozarks folk musical group "The Creek Rocks" led by banjoist Cindy Woolf and guitarist Mark Bilyeu. These longtime musical collaborators worked together on Cindy's three albums of original songs that began in 2005 and continued after the couple married in 2013 and established The Creek Rocks in 2015. Mark is a founding member of Ozarks family Big Smith, with whom he toured and recorded for 16 years. Their debut release, Wolf Hunter, is a collection of 16 folk songs from the Ozarks, drawn from the collections of folklorists Max Hunter of Springfield, Mo., Mark's hometown, and John Quincy Wolf of Batesville, Arkansas, where Cyndy grew up.
Cindy is well-known for her singular singing voice and enchanting performances of her original songs while Mark is applauded for his distinct guitar sound and clever turn of phrase. Together, they perform a mix of Ozark-inspired original songs and truly unique arrangements of traditional Ozark folksongs from the fun and frivolous anthems of the hills to the hair raising and harrowing ballads of the dark holler.
The Creek Rocks are the proud recipients of the 2024 Artist in Resonance Fellowships from the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress. They are currently researching song collector Sidney Robertson Coswell and her 1936-37 trip to Missouri and Arkansas. A musical project based upon his research will be released this year.
This live performance of The Creek Rocks is co-sponsored by the State Historical Society of Missouri, the Budds Center for American Music Studies at the University of Missouri School of Music, and Missouri Folks Arts.
