Don’t Miss the Union Pacific Big Boy Steam Engine in Mid-Missouri

Train enthusiasts won’t want to miss this historic event! The legendary Union Pacific Big Boy No. 4014, the world’s largest operating steam locomotive, is making its way across Missouri as part of the America’s 250 Coast-to-Coast Tour.

Please note: The train will not be open for public tours during its Jefferson City stop.

  • Departs St. Louis
  • Travels to Jefferson City
  • Arrival time: To be determined
  • The locomotive will remain overnight in Jefferson City.

Tuesday, July 21

  • 9:00 AM: Departs Jefferson City
  • 10:00–10:15 AM: Brief stop in California, Missouri
  • Approximately 5:30 PM: Arrives at Union Station in Kansas City
  • The public will be able to tour the locomotive in Kansas City until 8:00 PM.

If you’re hoping to catch a glimpse of Big Boy No. 4014, organizers recommend these viewing locations:

  • Jefferson Landing State Historic Site (100 Jefferson St.) along Water Street
  • Missouri Bicentennial Bridge connecting the Capitol grounds to Adrian’s Island
  • The pedestrian bridge over the Missouri River

With hot summer temperatures expected, anyone planning to watch the train should take precautions:

  • Bring plenty of water.
  • Wear light-colored, loose-fitting clothing.
  • Consider bringing an umbrella or other shade.
  • Be aware of the signs of heat-related illness, including confusion, fainting, hot or excessively sweaty skin, seizures, and a high body temperature. If symptoms occur, move to a cool place and seek medical attention immediately.
