Great Sandbagger 8k at McBaine Katy Trailhead

Ready for a race unlike any other? The Columbia Track Club’s Great Sandbagger 8K combines strategy and a little friendly competition for one of Mid-Missouri’s most entertaining running events.

Instead of racing against the clock, participants predict their finishing time before the race begins. Runners then start in staggered intervals based on those predictions, with the goal of everyone crossing the finish line together. Of course, that’s easier said than done—and the race has become known for attracting a few creative time estimates!

How the Race Works

Before the race begins, every runner predicts how long it will take them to complete the course.

Based on those predictions:

Participants start at different times.
Faster predicted runners start later.
Slower predicted runners start earlier.
The goal is for everyone to finish together.

The first person to cross the finish line wins the coveted traveling trophy, earns bragging rights for the year, and gets to add their own touch to the unique three-foot-tall trophy before passing it on to next year’s winner.
